Tom. X, pl. Xvi, p. 78. From histoire naturelle, générale et particulière. Paris, 1771. Etching and engraving on laid paper. Sheet size: 24.5 × 19.5 cm. A finely engraved anatomical plate depicting the articulated skeleton of a quadruped shown in lateral profile, carefully arranged upon a rectangular stone pedestal within a lightly sketched landscape. The skull, vertebral column, rib cage, and elongated limbs are rendered with scientific precision, each element identified by alphabetical letters corresponding to buffon’s explanatory text. The composition combines rigorous anatomical study with a restrained scenic setting—an approach characteristic of enlightenment natural history illustration, in which empirical observation is balanced by aesthetic clarity. The delicate parallel hatching and subtle tonal gradations lend volume and structural coherence to the skeletal form, while the elevated presentation on a plinth underscores the didactic purpose of the image. Upper margin inscribed “tom. X.” and “pl. Xvi. Pag. 78.” lower margin signed in the plate “de seve del.” and “cl. F. Gallet sculp.” (as visible). A clear plate mark visible. Printed on period laid paper. Condition: very good, with light age toning, a faint vertical fold from early binding, and minor marginal handling. Impression strong and well preserved. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
