Tome x – plate lvii, p. 362, from histoire naturelle, générale et particulière., paris 1771. Copper engraving. Paris, 18th century. Sheet size: approx. 24.5 x 19.5 cm. A refined anatomical and osteological plate from buffon’s celebrated histoire naturelle, volume x, illustrating skeletal studies of a rodent species, most likely the beaver, together with detailed cranial elements. The lower register (fig. 1) presents the complete articulated skeleton in lateral view, carefully arranged upon a classical stone plinth within a lightly sketched landscape — a composition typical of buffon’s anatomical series. The upper register (figs. 2 and 3) depicts the skull in dorsal view and the mandible separately, rendered with precise delineation of dentition and cranial structure. Executed with delicate cross-hatching and controlled tonal gradation, the engraving exemplifies the clarity and scientific rigor of late 18th-century french natural history illustration. Upper margin titled “tom. X” at left and “pl. Lvii. Pag. 362.” at right. Lower margin credits: “de seve del.” (delineavit) and “j. L. Legrand sculp.” (engraver). Printed on laid paper with visible central binding fold. Minor age toning and light foxing consistent with period examples. Margins remain ample. A fine example of enlightenment comparative anatomy, combining scientific documentation with elegant neoclassical presentation — characteristic of buffon’s influential natural history publications.
