Plate from Buffon's Histoire Naturelle, Tom. III – Pl. II, p. 234 This copperplate engraving presents a detailed anatomical study of the human brain and its principal internal structures, illustrated through multiple sectional views. The plate comprises three figures, each offering a distinct perspective intended to clarify the organization of the cerebral mass and its subdivisions. Figure 1 depicts the brain removed from the cranial cavity and viewed from an inferior or posterior aspect. The hemispheres are shown prominently, their convoluted surfaces rendered with fine, intricate line work. Beneath them, the cerebellum and brainstem structures are partially visible, demonstrating their relative position and attachment. The careful modeling of the cortical folds conveys both texture and volume. Figure 2 presents a superior view of the cranial cavity with the calvarium removed. The cerebral hemispheres occupy the greater portion of the cavity, separated by the longitudinal fissure. The underlying structures of the midbrain region are faintly indicated, while the surrounding cranial walls are delineated with restrained shading to frame the brain within its bony enclosure. Figure 3 offers a median (sagittal) section of the head, exposing the internal configuration of the brain in profile. The cerebral hemispheres, corpus callosum, ventricular spaces, cerebellum, and brainstem are distinctly shown in relation to the skull and facial structures. The layered cross-hatching differentiates neural tissue from bone and soft tissues, providing clarity to the sectional anatomy. The engraving is executed with refined precision characteristic of eighteenth-century anatomical illustration. The numbered annotations correspond to explanatory references in the accompanying text, reinforcing the plate’s didactic function. Balanced composition and subtle tonal gradation underscore both scientific rigor and aesthetic restraint, reflecting the period’s synthesis of medical inquiry and graphic craftsmanship.
