This sculptural piece exemplifies Scandinavian Art Deco refinement combined with the understated elegance characteristic of Swedish modern design. The vase features a softly fluted, fan-shaped body with a gently scalloped rim and a low pedestal foot. Its creamy off-white glaze has a porcelain-like softness, decorated with delicate small gold trefoil motifs scattered across the surface and finished with hand-applied gilding along the rim and base. The subtle vertical ribbing enhances the sense of movement and light, while the gold accents provide a restrained touch of luxury without overwhelming the form. The distinctive “Carrara” line is known for its refined silhouettes and elegant surfaces, inspired by classical forms yet adapted to modern interiors of the early 20th century. This example bears the Gustavsberg mark on the underside. The Carrara Vase is named after the pristine Carrara marble, which serves as its inspiration. The Carrara glaze was developed by Wilhelm Kåge for Gustavsberg in the 1930s. It is a flint porcelain with a highly calcined glaze which was first shown at exhibitions in Malmö and Copenhagen in 1930. Just like the revered stone, this vase boasts a flawless, pristine white glaze that radiates purity and grace. Wilhelm Kåge (1889–1960) was one of Sweden’s most influential ceramic artists and artistic directors at Gustavsberg, where he helped shape the identity of Scandinavian design between the 1910s and 1950s. Graceful yet striking, this vase works beautifully as a centerpiece or decorative object in both classic and contemporary settings.
