Japanese Kutani Porcelain Sleeping Cat Okimono, “Nemuri-Neko” Style, Taishō–Early Shōwa Period
A refined Japanese Kutani porcelain okimono depicting a peacefully sleeping cat, dating to the Taishō to early Shōwa period (circa 1912–1930s). Gracefully modeled with softly rounded contours and a serene expression, the figure captures the quiet elegance and intimacy characteristic of Japanese animal sculpture. This type of figure is often inspired by the celebrated “Nemuri-Neko” (Sleeping Cat) motif at the Nikkō Tōshōgū, one of Japan’s most famous shrine complexes. The motif symbolizes peace, guardianship, and tranquility — a cat resting calmly while remaining watchful. Executed in porcelain with a smooth, luminous glaze, the sculpture is decorated with a simple band or collar around the neck, a traditional detail frequently seen in Kutani animal figures. Subtle surface wear lends the piece a gentle, time-softened character that enhances its authenticity and charm. Both decorative and culturally evocative, this early 20th-century piece embodies the Japanese aesthetic appreciation for quiet beauty and everyday subjects elevated through craftsmanship.
