This painting depicts a young Neoclassical / Victorian woman with a sensuous, complex pose, sleeping peacefully on a marble terrace in a vivid, sheer orange gown. The setting is Mediterranean, with the sea visible in the distance, and the warm, golden light suggests the heat of summer. Leighton was known for his classicist Academic style and his commitment to the ideal of art for art's sake, focusing on aesthetic beauty rather than narrative context. The pose of the sleeping figure was reportedly inspired by Michelangelo's sculpture Night.

The original painting first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1895, and received critical acclaim and was a popular hit. The painting disappeared from public view in the 1930s and was largely forgotten during a period when Victorian art was out of favor. It was rediscovered in the early 1960s, found boxed in above a chimney in a house in Battersea. It was purchased by Puerto Rican industrialist and politician Luis A. Ferré for the Museo de Arte de Ponce in 1963, where it has remained since.
