Antique Indian Bronze Temple Toy Horse-Drawn Chariot on Wheels, 19th Century
A rare and evocative 19th-century Indian bronze temple toy, finely cast as a horse-drawn chariot mounted on functioning wheels. This sculptural piece features a four-legged horse with articulated axles, richly detailed with caparisoned trappings, braided mane, and traditional ornamentation.
Crafted using traditional lost-wax techniques, the piece embodies the refined metalworking heritage of India, particularly associated with the master artisans of Andhra Pradesh. Originally conceived as a devotional offering in Hindu temples—often dedicated to deities such as Shiva or Ayyanar—these “Temple Toys” were both sacred objects and cherished playthings, bridging ritual and daily life.
The bronze retains a beautiful, naturally aged patina, enhancing its authenticity and visual depth. A substantial and tactile object, it stands as both a collector’s piece and a compelling decorative sculpture.
Provenance: Private Californian collection of Indian antiquities.
A highly collectible example of Indian devotional metalwork, combining cultural significance with sculptural presence.
Dimensions: 6 in. H x 7 in W x 4 in. D.
