Johann Berthelsen (1883–1972) was a Danish-born American artist whose life was a unique harmony between two worlds: professional music and Impressionist painting
A Lyrical Beginning - Born in Copenhagen, Berthelsen immigrated to the United States at age seven [9]. Before ever picking up a professional brush, he was an accomplished operatic baritone. He graduated from the Chicago Music College in 1905 and spent years touring as a lead singer in opera and light opera companies.
The Shift to the Canvas - The Great Depression played a pivotal role in his artistic career. As the economic downturn made music lessons and performances a luxury few could afford, Berthelsen turned toward his hobby of painting as a means of survival.Self-Taught Master: He had no formal training in the visual arts, but his background in music gave him a natural sense of rhythm, tone, and "lyrical" composition
The "New York Winter" Niche: He moved to New York City and became fascinated by the way snow transformed the steel and stone of Manhattan. He soon became the preeminent painter of NYC winter streetscapes, particularly favoring landmarks like St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Central Park, and St. Paul’s Chapel .
