A striking mid century Italian ceramic bookend in the form of a cardinal holding stacked books, finished in a rich red glaze with contrasting black and cream details. The figure is rendered with an expressive, elongated form and retains a strong sculptural quality typical of Tuscan workshop ceramics.
The underside shows an incised mark along with a handwritten interior label that appears to read “64,” supporting a 1964 date of production. The style and construction are consistent with ceramics associated with the Montelupo Fiorentino region.
Designed as a functional bookend, the piece also stands beautifully as an independent sculptural object. Its presence and character make it especially well suited for shelf styling or desk display.
