An exceptional and rare set of eight ‘Luisa’ armchairs, designed by Franco Albini and produced by Poggi in 1955. Crafted from solid walnut, these chairs exemplify the depth of Albini’s formal and technical mastery, offering not just furniture, but a study in balance, proportion, and precision.
The Luisa chair is widely regarded as a landmark in mid-century Italian design, the culmination of 15 years of rigorous experimentation by Albini. His pursuit was to distill the essence of a multifunctional armchair; stripping it to its structural core while retaining elegance and adaptability. The final version, introduced in 1955, was awarded the prestigious Compasso d’Oro by ADI (Italy’s Association for Industrial Design), cementing its place in the canon of 20th-century design. with its sleek, minimalist silhouette, the Luisa reveals Albini’s architectural vision: each element is resolved with clarity and intent. The interplay of substance and void, the calculated disconnects between components, and the deliberate thickening at structural joints speak to a form born purely of function. And yet, it is deeply expressive, technical refinement rendered with sculptural grace. This set of eight features original walnut frames in very good vintage condition, showcasing the rich tones and grain variation unique to the species. The chairs have been reupholstered in white linen, a choice that highlights the purity of line and material while providing a soft, contemporary contrast to the warm wood. Such a complete set is exceedingly rare, particularly in this configuration and condition. Ideal for curated interiors, gallery settings, or refined architectural projects, these chairs offer a tangible connection to the intellectual rigor and poetic materiality of Franco Albini, a master of Italian Rationalism.
