Formed in … Read more This Art Deco terre mêlée mosaic ceramic vase by Jean Gerbino was produced in Vallauris, France in 1955. Formed in a compact gourd shape with applied disc handles, the piece demonstrates Gerbino’s distinctive approach to mosaic ceramics and surface pattern. The body is constructed using the terre mêlée technique, in which small pieces of coloured clay are assembled to form a continuous, intricate mosaic across the surface. This creates a richly varied ground of marbled tones, over which a geometric band encircles the widest part of the form. The band introduces a structured contrast to the organic complexity of the surrounding pattern. The rim is finished with a green glazed edge, echoed by the applied disc handles positioned symmetrically at either side. The vase retains its impressed Gerbino signature alongside the Vallauris mark. An original label remains affixed to the base, handwritten with the date 1955, likely a retailer’s annotation.
