Fine gold detailing accent throughout the image; through the horse's main, breath and tail, filling the edging with elaborate scrollwork, lighting up their sky with dozens of gold stars, writing along the bottom of the image and artist signature in the bottom corner. A rare and exceptional finely painted vintage Imperial Russian lacquerware box.

Inside the lid and inside the bottom are painted with a stunning deep red. The base has rounded edges, is accented with the same beautifully delicate gold detailing all around. A square footed chest form with a delicate red-hinged lid.

A traditional Palekh box is a Russian lacquer miniature, hand-painted using egg tempera on papier-mâché, typically featuring intricate, vibrant scenes from fairy tales, folklore, or village life. Originating from the village of Palekh, these artisanal pieces are characterized by a black background, delicate gold shading, elongated figures, and ornate golden borders. They are commonly produced in traditional Russian villages known for this craft, including Palekh, Fedoskino, Mstera, and Kholui.

Included with the box is the receipt from the art gallery that commissioned the prior sale. Sold for $25 in the 1990s in the city of Yalta, Crimea.
