Harriet Fischer grew up in a busy artist's studio where her father, the artist Paul Fischer, used the members of his family as models. Harriet appears frequently, both as a young girl and as an adolescent as a supporting character in his street pictures. When Harriet, herself, started painting, she exhibited frequently and with success beside her father in the years before World War One. On her mother's side, she was also of significant artistic lineage through her grandmother, the Norwegian painter Hulda Azora Tegner. Harriet first studied at the Art Academy in Copenhagen with Charlotte Sode and Julie Meldahl and, subsequently in Paris and Madrid where she studied with Danielo Vasquez Diaz. During the years between 1920-1940, she exhibited widely and with success including in France, Italy, Spain, Yugoslavia, Austria, Norway and Sweden. She also made frequent shorter painting trips, including to Belgium, Germany, Hungary, England and Morocco. At home in Denmark, she exhibited consistently for many years both at the Charlottenborg Spring exhibition and at the Female Artist's Retrospective.
Harriet's style is characterized by versatility with a preference for harmonious and structured compositions and a soft, often pastel based, palette. In her early portraits, psychological empathy is noted and, in the later landscapes, of which this is a fine example, a quiet, lyrical tone may often be found.
