Signed upper left, 'G. Rochegrosse' for George Rochegrosse (French, 1859-1938) and dated 1881.
Framed dimensions: 15.5 H x 1.5 D x 13.5 W inches
A finely-painted figural oil showing a woman wearing an embroidered bodice with a high ruff. A lyrical and penetrating character study by this well-exhibited and highly-decorated French Orientalist painter.
Georges Antoine Rochegrosse first studied with Jules Lefebvre and Gustave Boulanger and made his Paris Salon début in 1882 with 'Vitellius Dragged Through the Streets of Rome by the People' (1882, Musée Sens). The following year, he won the Prix du Salon with 'Andromaque' (1882–83, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen). In quite another style, and a masterpiece of color, is his 'Le Chevalier aux Fleurs' (The Knight of Flowers, 1894; Musée d'Orsay, Paris). Rochegrosse was elected an Officer of the Legion of Honor in 1892 and, in 1906, received the medal of honor from the Academie for 'The Red Delight'. He also illustrated several successful books and many of his drawings for these are held in the permanent collection of the British Museum in London. Rochegrosse lived and painted his final years in Algeria, but he died in Paris and is buried in Montparnasse Cemetery.
Over the course of a long and successful career, Rochegrosse exhibited a total of forty-three times at the Salon des Artistes Françaises, (1882-1887, 1889-1891, 1893-1896, 1898 to 1899, 1901, 1903, 1905-1909, 1911-1914, 1920-1929, 1931-1937). He was the recipient of numerous juried awards including the Salon prize in 1883, the Medal of Honor in 1906 and the Gold Medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1900. He was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1892, and an Officer of the Legion in 1910.
