Atlantic Avenue Wharf, Boston Harbor, by Sergio Roffo. Pleinair Watercolor on paper. An early work by America’s most talented and respected living coastal/seascape painter. Double-matted with a silver-patina wood frame. This was painted when Roffo was a young 30 years old, before he transitioned to oil. It is a glorious example of capturing mood vs landscape: the brooding sky and distempered, scampering waters at the intersection of Boston Harbor and the Charles River mouth.
Dimensions: 36” x 28.5” x 2” framed, 30” x 22” painting
About Sergio Roffo:
Born in Italy in 1953, Sergio Roffo was brought to America in 1961. He studied at the Vesper George School of Art, where his teachers included leading Boston School artist Robert Douglas Hunter. Initially a freelance commercial artist for major corporate customers like AT&T and Coca Cola, Roffo developed an early passion for painting in the field and for landscapes.
In the early 1990s he began to focus on his gallery art, and his style has developed into a crisp and elegant interpretation of the New England coastal landscape. His work, inspired by the work of American traditional painters, rapidly brought him recognition. In the last decade he has won major awards in shows sponsored by the Copley Society of Boston, the American Artists’ Professional League, and others. Roffo is an elected member of the American Society of Marine Artists and of the Guild of Boston Artists.
Roffo’s depictions of the New England landscape have been included in a variety of museum exhibitions and have earned him many awards, including two prestigious Grumbacher Gold Medals and the Yankee Sagendorph Award presented by Yankee Magazine. He has been designated a Copley Master by the Copley Society of Boston. He has also been selected for inclusion in numerous publications, such as Cape Cod Life and Down East Magazine.
