An impressive and substantial early American needlework sampler executed in silk on a silk ground. This piece features the sophisticated architectural and floral motifs synonymous with the famed Mary Balch School of Providence, Rhode Island. Measuring an oversized 27” x 23”, it serves as a commanding example of Federal-era female education and folk art.
Design & Detail
The composition center's on a classical footed basket overflowing with fruit and botanical sprigs, flanked by delicate floral sprays. The perimeter is defined by a complex, undulating floral vine border—a hallmark of high-style New England samplers from the late 18th to early 19th centuries.
Condition Report
This antique textile shows a distinguished patina of age. There is significant overall fading to the original silk pigments, resulting in a muted, ethereal palette of creams, tans, and soft sage. The silk ground shows splits consistent with the extreme age of the delicate textile. It is housed in a later custom frame behind glass. Given its age and delicate materials, it is being sold in "Good" antique condition, consistent with its 200-year history.
