item :
futurist majolica ceramic sculpture, entirely hand-molded and glazed with extremely rich, dark bronze enamels, depicting a crested wild boar. Signed under the base with an engraved mark, "bottega gatti faenza." this sculpture is particularly rare; it is difficult to find animal sculptures from this manufacturer with bronze enamel, which is highly reminiscent of the works of important modern designers and sculptors. As can be seen from the historical notes, after 1986, many sculptors and artists collaborated with the "bottega gatti" factory, including arnoldo pomodoro, ugo la pietra, aldo mondino, and many others; therefore, it is also likely that this sculpture is the work of one of these important sculptors. The artistic quality and originality of the work are beyond question. Notice the beauty of the boar's form, entirely hand-sculpted and therefore a one-of-a-kind piece; the classy furrow on its belly; and the highly original perforated crest on the animal's back, in true futurist style.
useful information for appraising this item:
this factory boasts the collaboration of numerous important artists from faenza, and has achieved numerous auction results, as you can see from the last photos where we've included some. Similar majolica ceramic works, some finished with metallic lustres, all command very high prices, ranging from €700-900, up to €9,000 for the largest, rarest, and most valuable sculptures, plus a 25-30% buyer's premium. This gives you an idea of the importance of this factory.
information on the artist and/or manufacturer:
the "gatti & c." factory it was founded by riccardo gatti and luigi montabilini in 1928 in faenza. The factory, under the direction of riccardo gatti, remained active until his death in 1972. Subsequently, management was entrusted to gatti's nephew and student, dante servadei, assisted by his son davide, who, to distinguish the production from that of his uncle, changed the name of the factory to "bottega gatti." therefore, our sculpture was created after 1972. In the last photos, we have also included some historical information about riccardo gatti, for those who would like to learn more. This piece has an attribution mark,
