A finely executed early 20th-century classical-revival bas-relief wall plaque in white-bodied fired ceramic, presented in its original deep giltwood shadowbox frame with a dark surround. The relief depicts an allegorical tableau with classically rendered figures, a white horse, camel, palm trees, vessels, and a distant ship, giving the work a strong Grand Tour character.
The composition is distinguished by its depth and sculptural clarity. Figures and forms project from the surface with notable dimensionality, creating impressive architectural impact on the wall. Soft hand-applied tones in bronze, blush, cream, and pale aqua lend subtle variation to the drapery, vessels, and landscape, while the pale ceramic surface gives the piece a carved-stone effect.
The shadowbox presentation is an important part of its appeal. Layered giltwood molding, carved detail, glazing, and a fabric-lined interior give the work a refined, architectural presentation that complements the relief without overwhelming it.
Retained within a multigenerational private family collection, this piece was acquired in Brooklyn in the 1930s from a design shop importing art from Europe, lending it an added sense of history and distinction. A beautifully scaled and well-preserved work, distinguished by its sculptural depth, period character, and notable provenance.
