The prints originate from the distinguished Swedish natural history series Svenska Fåglar Efter Naturen Och På Sten Ritade, published in Sweden in 1929 by the Stockholm publisher A. Börtzells. The series represents the elegant Nordic tradition of early twentieth-century natural history illustration, combining scientific precision with the restrained aesthetic typical of Scandinavian design. These original vintage prints are offered unframed, giving flexibility to select a frame that best suits the intended interior. The six plates illustrate different species and plumage variations within the merganser group. These include the Smew (Mergellus albellus), the Red-breasted Merganser (Mergus serrator), and the Goosander or Common Merganser (Mergus merganser). Several plates show the clear sexual dimorphism typical of mergansers, with males displaying bold contrasting plumage while the females appear in more subdued tones. Together the prints provide a visually engaging study of these remarkable diving ducks. Each bird is depicted standing on rocks near the water’s edge, a naturalistic setting that reflects their coastal and freshwater habitats. The artists carefully render the distinctive narrow bills, elegant body proportions, and finely patterned plumage that characterize the species. The compositions remain simple and balanced, allowing the viewer to focus on the anatomical detail and coloration of the birds while maintaining a calm decorative appearance. The plates bear both the scientific Latin names and Swedish vernacular names, reflecting the educational purpose of the publication. Natural history works of this period were intended not only for scientific study but also for a broader audience interested in the wildlife of Scandinavia and the Arctic regions. Lithography was particularly well suited to ornithological illustration, allowing artists to reproduce subtle tonal shading and delicate feather textures with exceptional clarity. Scandinavian publishers became well known for producing natural history books of high visual and scientific quality, and the Svenska Fåglar series remains a fine example of this tradition. Displayed together, the six lithographs form a harmonious decorative set. The contrast between the striking black-and-white Smew, the crested Red-breasted Merganser, and the elegant Goosander creates visual variety while maintaining a unified palette of natural tones. The prints work beautifully in coastal interiors, studies, libraries, or Scandinavian-inspired spaces. These are original lithographs printed in color at the time of publication in 1929 and are not later reproductions. Condition: Good condition for their age with light age toning and occasional minor spotting in the margins. The printed images remain clean and well preserved. Framing tips: These prints frame beautifully as a curated wall arrangement. A museum-style presentation with generous ivory mats and simple walnut or oak frames works particularly well. The six plates can be displayed as a balanced two-by-three grid or in a horizontal sequence. Note: We sell the prints unframed.
