The eponymous book of the Bible tells the story of the prophet Daniel whom King Darius the Mede, deceived by court rivals jealous of his rank, condemns to death and has him thrown into the lions' den. Having discovered the deception, the king at dawn the next day hurries back to the pit and finds Daniel alive, who tells how God had sent an angel to close the lions' jaws, 'because I was found blameless before him.' The biblical episode has been depicted many times in art, both pictorial and sculptural, given its strong narrative as well as educational impact.The painting went to public auction on October 25, 2018 as a '17th-century Lombard school,' but in our opinion it is a later, 19th-century work inspired by ancient pictorial modes. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
