Description :
This masterpiece, titled The Geometric Golden Fold, is a radiant highlight of Krista Augius’s 2025 Circle Series. It stands as a sophisticated intersection of meticulous geometry and luminous color, designed to engage both the eye and the psyche. Composition and Visual Rhythm The painting features a rhythmic grid of crisp white circles suspended against a vibrant, saturated saffron-yellow field. The brilliance of the background creates a "living aura," giving the work an inner glow that feels both warm and modern. The true mastery lies in the optical "cinch" at the center of the canvas. Here, the perfect circles gradually compress into slender vertical ellipses, creating the illusion of a three-dimensional fold. This central "waist" draws the viewer’s gaze inward, transforming a flat surface into a pulsing, architectural form. Artistic Philosophy Drawing from her background in neuroscience and Lithuanian heritage, Augius uses this "fold" as a metaphor for resilience and centering. The repetition of form suggests a meditative pulse—a visual heartbeat—while the central convergence represents the human capacity to return to a point of balance amidst the complexity of life. Style and Presentation Movement: Influenced by the Op Art movement, the high-contrast palette and shifting shapes create a shimmering, kinetic energy that seems to vibrate as the viewer moves. Form: Housed in a minimalist white floating frame, the painting’s clean edges emphasize its role as a window into a disciplined, yet joyful, geometric world. This work was recently highlighted at the 2026 Palm Springs Modernism Show, showcasing Augius's ability to transform simple geometric shapes into complex, engaging visual experiences.
Artist Biography
Krista Augius is a multidisciplinary artist based in Los Angeles and Malibu, known for her richly textured oil paintings that bridge the gap between neuroscience, heritage, and optical illusion. Her work is characterized by a "restrained formal language" that explores human perception and the capacity to "return to center" amidst instability.
Background and Education
Augius maintains a unique professional duality, holding a Doctor of Physical Therapy from the University of Southern California and a BS in Biology from the University of Illinois. This scientific background deeply informs her "methodical, embodied approach" to painting, where she treats the canvas as a rigorous investigation of anatomical and perceptual systems.
Artistic Lineage and Influence
Raised in Chicago as a first-generation Lithuanian-American, Augius comes from a prominent family of artists:
Grandfather: Paulius Augius, a renowned graphic artist and lithographer.
Great Uncle: Maironis, a celebrated Lithuanian poet and spiritualist who wrote the national anthem, "Lietuva Brangi".
Technique: She utilizes the Mische technique, a historic 16th-century method of layering tempera and oil glazes to achieve luminous depth. She studied this under mentors Robert Venosa and Martina Hoffmann in Cadaqués, Spain.
Key Bodies of Work
Circle Series (2025): Her most recent inquiry into "singular return" and internal continuity, using geometric folds to engage spatial perception.
Mythical Abstraction (2023–2024): A series focusing on "perceptual density" and the transition between realism and abstraction.
Mythical Codes (2014–2023): An investigation into patterned language and Lithuanian folklore as cognitive structures.
Exhibitions and Recognition
Augius has exhibited internationally at venues such as the LA Art Show, SF Art Market, and the MAACA Museum in Italy. In 2024, her work was acquired into the permanent collection of the Samogitian Museum in Lithuania. Her art has also been featured in major films, including Iron Man 3 and Fast & Furious 7.
