This striking large original lithograph, titled "Chula Vista II" (1981), is a quintessential example of Peter Alexander’s (American, 1939–2020) exploration of light and atmosphere. A key figure in the California Light and Space movement, Alexander transitioned in the 1980s to energetic, expressionistic landscapes. This piece captures a dramatic storm over the Pacific coast with bold, gestural black lines and a masterful use of negative space.
This specific work is an Artist’s Proof (A.P.), aside from the standard edition of 30, making it a rare find for collectors. It is pencil-signed, titled, and dated by the artist along the lower edge.
Peter Alexander (1939–2020) was a central figure in the Light and Space movement, a uniquely Californian art movement that emerged in Los Angeles in the 1960s. Alongside peers like James Turrell and Robert Irwin, Alexander was obsessed with how light interacts with objects and environments.
While he is famous for his translucent resin sculptures, his move into 2-D works in the early 1980s—like this "Chula Vista II"—marked a celebrated evolution in his career. In these lithographs, he traded physical resin for gestural, expressionistic lines that capture the atmospheric mood of the Southern California coast.
His work is held in the permanent collections of the world's most prestigious institutions, including:
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York
The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)
