A sculptural hand-built earthenware vessel, traditionally formed using coil and paddle techniques and smoke-fired to achieve its distinctive surface.
The pot carries a striking natural contrast between warm terracotta and deep charcoal blackening, created during the firing process. This tonal shift moves organically across the form, emphasizing the rounded body and subtly flared neck. Around the shoulder, finely incised geometric motifs—triangular and circular elements filled with parallel lines—introduce rhythm and structure, balancing the softness of the form with deliberate mark-making.
The result is a piece that feels both grounded and architectural. It reads as a functional object at first, but holds its own as a sculptural presence—particularly effective in minimal, organic, or desert-inspired interiors.
Early to mid-20th century, sub-Saharan Africa.
