This pair of glazed ceramic sculptures depicts two Eastern court dignitaries, crafted with the refined decorative style typical of mid-20th-century Italian art. The works are from the Ugo Zaccagnini & Figli factory, located in the renowned ceramics district of Sesto Fiorentino, known for the quality of its artistic production.
Dimensions
• Height: 40 cm
• Width: 13 cm
• Depth: 16 cm
The two figures are depicted seated on square stools, with solemn and restrained poses that evoke the dignity and authority of the sitters depicted.
The statues are made of ceramic with a glossy white glaze, enriched with polychrome bronze-toned parts and gold details. This interplay of colors highlights the details of the clothing, hairstyles, and accessories.
One sitter is depicted with a long, stylized beard and an elaborate headdress decorated with geometric and floral motifs. The composed posture, with one arm bent and the other resting, suggests authority and wisdom.
The other is depicted with a high, ornate hairstyle, characterized by sinuous decorative elements. The pose is elegant and composed, with one arm raised and the other resting along the body, while the robe falls in soft folds that enhance the three-dimensionality of the ceramic.
This color combination—white, gold, and bronze—gives the whole an elegant and dramatic look, highly appreciated in decorative furnishings of the 1960s.
In the 1950s and 1960s, the Zaccagnini factory stood out for its high-quality decorative productions, often inspired by exotic and oriental themes, very popular in European interior design of the period. Figures of oriental dignitaries or wise men were particularly popular as ornamental objects for living rooms and stately spaces.
