Parcheesi is an American adaptation of the ancient Indian cross and circle game called Pachisi.
This classic race-and-chase board game for two to four players was trademarked in 1874, and went on to become America’s best-selling board game. It held this top spot for decades until it was finally overtaken by the release of Monopoly in 1935.
This board was likely made in the late 19th Century, considered the Golden Age of Folk Art. This period saw a surge in handmade, decorative boards. While commercially made boards were becoming common, many families created their own highly personalized, painted wooden versions as a form of folk art.
