The piece is made of papier mâché with hand painted and applied paper chinoiserie style designs including flowers, birds and pagodas within intricate borders. Such objects were often manufactured in China for export markets in the 18th and 19th centuries. This piece is not marked. The shape with slightly curved sides suggests it was designed for displaying small items or serving tea. This would be lovely hung on a wall in a dining room or kitchen. See less
