A striking set of four “s” chairs, designed by tom dixon and produced by cappellini in the 1990s, one of the most recognizable icons of late-20th-century design. Metal, painted iron and padded leather. These chairs embody dixon’s early experimentation with industrial materials and sculptural silhouettes, resulting in a fluid, anthropomorphic form that blurs the line between furniture and art. The “s” chair is celebrated for its continuous, sinuous profile, an elegant s-shaped curve that appears to defy gravity. This particular set features the black leather upholstery version, which accentuates the chair’s sculptural contours and gives it a refined, sophisticated character. The upholstery is meticulously stitched along the perimeter, forming a clean, graphic edge. The base consists of a circular steel frame, stamped with the cappellini mark, providing both stability and a visually light foundation. The dramatic contrast between the slender, dynamic seat and the grounded ring base is a hallmark of dixon’s early design language. Seat and back: black leather over molded internal structure base: circular steel ring with integrated supports, marked cappellini craftsmanship: high-quality italian production, showcasing robust stitching and durable upholstery condition: overall excellent vintage condition with minor signs of age consistent with careful use; leather retains a beautiful sheen and patina. Originally designed in the late 1980s and later edited by cappellini, the s chair became an instant design classic and remains one of dixon’s signature pieces—featured in museums and design collections worldwide. Its biomorphic shape reflects the designer’s creative roots in welded salvage metalwork while embracing the precision of italian high-end manufacturing. Complete sets of four are increasingly rare, especially in uniform black leather. These chairs make a dramatic statement around a dining table, in a contemporary living room, or as sculptural pieces in a gallery or retail environment this piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker.
