Antique Japanese hibachi from the Meiji period, made around 1900 in a combination of paulownia, Japanese cedar, copper and iron, conceived as a domestic heating piece for everyday use in the traditional Japanese interior.
This type of object, known in its elongated form as a nagahibachi, was used as a portable brazier to warm small rooms and accompany daily life in the home. Beyond its heating function, it also provided a practical top surface and small side drawers intended for tools, tobacco or household accessories.
The structure displays the characteristic lightness of kiri wood, valued in Japan for its dimensional stability, low weight and resistance to humidity. The three side drawers, metal handles and inner copper liner reinforce its utilitarian nature, while the restrained design reflects the functional elegance associated with the late nineteenth century.
The surface retains visible wear, marks and a warm patina developed over time, qualities that today sit naturally within interiors shaped by a wabi sabi sensibility. It now works beautifully as a side piece, conversation object or decorative accent with strong material and historical presence.
