"The Valley of Living Waters" (1970)
Original oil on canvas painting by Tamás Galambos (b. 1939)
Aprox. dimensions:
Painting: 39"W × 27"H
Frame: 40"W × 28"H
Provenance:
The reverse of the painting bears a dedication, “To Milton Stolkin,” referencing Milton Stolkin, the renowned Los Angeles philanthropist and arts patron. This personal inscription suggests an early ownership link to a major figure in the Southern California arts community.
Description:
This mesmerizing oil painting by Tamás Galambos unfolds in a dreamlike, folkloric landscape. A cascade of small figures, rivers, and stylized trees populate a crimson valley, guided by a central horned animal that anchors the scene in myth. Galambos’s signature naïve style—patterned, decorative, and rich in color—infuses the composition with both charm and symbolic weight. This painting exemplifies his magical realism, drawing from folklore, ritual, and myth to create a quietly powerful narrative world.
Condition:
Overall, the painting is in good original condition. There is a small area of minor paint loss in the upper left corner, and the floating frame has some minor touch-ups. However, the painting remains in very good original condition, with no tears or significant damage.
Artist Biography
Tamás Galambos (born 1939) belongs to a generation of Hungarian artists whose early creative years unfolded under the political restrictions of Soviet-influenced Eastern Europe. During this period, artistic expression was often shaped by strict cultural oversight. Within these limitations, Galambos developed an inventive visual language that allowed him to explore symbolic and narrative themes while navigating the realities of censorship.
His work began gaining wider recognition during the more culturally open climate of the 1980s, when his unique artistic voice attracted attention both in Hungary and internationally. Galambos is a versatile and multifaceted creator whose oeuvre spans several thematic directions.
One of the most distinctive aspects of his work is his imaginative nature scenes—large, intricately detailed compositions filled with stylized trees, animals, and small human figures arranged in tapestry-like landscapes. These works embody a form of magical realism in which elements of folklore, mythology, and everyday rural life coexist within a carefully structured visual world.
Galambos intentionally adopted a pseudo-naïve style inspired by folk art and medieval icon painting. This approach not only reflects his aesthetic interests but also provided a practical means of exhibiting work during the politically controlled cultural climate of the late 20th century.
Alongside these poetic landscapes, he also produced paintings containing social and political commentary. Some of these works, influenced by elements of pop art, were considered too critical to exhibit publicly in Hungary before the political changes surrounding the Fall of the Berlin Wall.
Across his varied body of work—whether exploring nature, mythology, or social critique—Galambos often incorporates a subtle thread of irony. Through symbolism, stylized narrative, and playful exaggeration, he reflects on human behavior and society. Today his work is increasingly appreciated for its originality, craftsmanship, and imaginative depth within the context of late 20th-century Central European art.
