It’s believed to be an authentic American hand-splint white oak or hickory piece from the mountains of North Carolina, possibly Forsyth County.
With its lovely patina and bluish-dyed stripes on the bottom which stands out as shown in the photos. The upper rim has a two-sided under-and-over weave pattern, with small nails in some spots for added strength. The colored splints suggest it may originate from the Shenandoah Valley and the mountains of North Carolina, where families often decorated basket bottoms with dyed splints. Baskets with blue-dyed splints like this are commonly called “Shelton Sister Baskets.” See less
