The stunning mahogany in the drawer faces attest to its origin as a luxury piece made by a skilled craftsperson in a large city. The thick reeded columns to the sides of the drawers and the ring-turned feet were key design elements in Baltimore furniture of this period. While the evidence is not strong enough to make a definite attribution, a Baltimore origin is a strong possibly, and if not, it was made in another substantial Mid-Atlantic city influenced by Baltimore.

While many chests of this period do not have the top drawer gallery, they are especially useful in a modern context to hold smaller items that would not be as conveniently stored in the larger drawers. We hope this chest finds a home where its charm and character are appreciated! See less
