Beautiful boxes crafted with dovetail joinery depicting different scenes in gilt. One features a figure riding a mythological dragon and the other with a figure in a garden, both surrounded by bats amidst clouds which represent good fortune and happiness in Chinese culture. A curved body has an all-around relief geometric fretwork pattern in gilt and is raised on a shapely footed base with scroll detail.

Presentation boxes were designed for gifting items of high value and subsequently used to hold jewelry, keepsakes, documents, tea or ceremonial offerings. These boxes were likely for the Guo Da Li (betrothal ceremony) given by the groom's family to the bride's family traditionally as a pair to signify a harmonious union. Crafted by skilled artisans, these vessels were highly prized as they blend meticulous craftsmanship, symbolic art and functionality being integral to both daily life and formal etiquette. They are crafted of a lighter weight wood for portability as artisans applied many coats of lacquer to protect the precious items inside.
