Color Palette: Traditionally uses three main colors—amber (yellow/brown), green, and cream (white)—achieved by adding mineral oxides to a lead-based glaze. Occasionally, rare cobalt-blue or purple glazes were used for high-status pieces.
The "Dripping" Aesthetic: Because lead glazes are fluid in the kiln, they naturally run and mingle during firing. This creates a splashed, variegated look where colors bleed into one another, making every piece unique.
Naturalistic Realism: Unlike earlier, more rigid styles, Tang Sancai is known for its lifelike poses and attention to anatomical detail. This is seen in the camel's "braying" open mouth and the individual, spirited expressions of the musicians.
Unglazed Details: Artisans often left faces and hands unglazed because the runny lead glaze would blur fine features. These areas were instead painted with pigments after firing to maintain detail.

Cultural Symbolism
Silk Road Influence: The subject—a Bactrian camel carrying foreign musicians—is a classic "Silk Road" motif. It represents the cosmopolitan spirit of the era, where Central Asian music, people, and goods were highly fashionable in the Chinese capital, Chang'an.
Mingqi (Spirit Objects): These were originally funerary wares intended to be buried in tombs. They were "spirit objects" designed to provide the deceased with entertainment and transportation in the afterlife.
