Description
A striking and substantial Chinese Famille Rose porcelain moon flask (baoyueping) featuring elaborate gilt dragon-form handles and richly detailed figural and floral decoration.
This impressive statement piece stands 20 inches high, with a 15-inch width across the body/handles and 7 inches deep, making it a stunning display piece. The classic moon flask form—flattened circular body with a cylindrical neck—originated in the Ming dynasty and became especially popular in export wares of the late Qing and Republic periods.
The body is decorated in vibrant overglaze Famille Rose (fencai) enamels, showcasing:
A detailed figural court/interior scene with elegantly dressed figures in traditional robes
Lush floral motifs including peonies, lotus blossoms, and other flowering plants
Butterflies, fruit (including peaches), and symbolic decorative elements
Medallion panels featuring birds among flowers
Scrolling borders and wave motifs in turquoise, pink, and gold accents
Dragon handles are richly gilt and finely modeled, symbolizing power, strength, and good fortune in Chinese culture.
