In … Read more This rare, petite 11-inch stool is a traditional masterpiece from the Bamun (or Bamoun) people of the Cameroon Grassfields. In this region, stools supported by human figures, known as Caryatids, were highly prestigious objects reserved for the lineage of the Fon (King) or high-ranking nobility. The figures are not merely decorative; they represent the ancestors and the community "supporting" the weight of the leader, symbolizing the interconnectedness of power and people. Carved from a single, solid block of dense indigenous hardwood, this stool features five delicately carved figures encircling a central pillar. Each figure is rendered with the signature Bamun aesthetic: rounded, expressive faces and hands resting protectively on their torsos. The stool is finished in a deep, dark historic patina with an authentic "user sheen" on the seat, earned from decades of traditional handling. Despite its "petite" scale, the thick, substantial seat and base give the piece a sense of monumental gravity usually found in much larger works.

With a 9-inch diameter and 11-inch height, this stool is an exceptional sculptural pedestal. It is perfectly sized to elevate a single prized object—such as a small bronze, a primitive clay vessel, or a cluster of dried botanicals—on a console, a bookshelf, or a deep mantel.
