The views were issued in the mid-19th-century series Picturesque Views of Seats of Noblemen and Gentlemen of Great Britain and Ireland, published in London by William Mackenzie. The series was intended to illustrate the great aristocratic residences of Britain during the Victorian era and combines architectural documentation with the picturesque landscape tradition. Printed as finely detailed lithographs and finished with delicate contemporary hand-coloring, the images present each estate within its landscaped parkland setting. Figures, lakes, and park scenery reinforce the scale and elegance of the houses while reflecting the Victorian fascination with country estates as symbols of wealth, culture, and social prestige. Trentham Hall, Staffordshire Trentham Hall near Stoke-on-Trent was one of the great aristocratic estates of Staffordshire and the principal seat of the Dukes of Sutherland. The estate became widely known as the home of the British Prime Minister Lord Palmerston and later of the Mountbatten family. Broadlands remains a historic private residence and is occasionally open to the public.
