Hand-painted with pastel enamels in the famille rose manner, each vignette depicts boys at play in a courtyard garden, chaperoned by a young woman and holding various symbolic objects, such as the lotus flower or the reed organ (sheng). These motifs express a blessing of many sons and prosperity to the entire family. Traces of gilt linework outline each cartouche and decorate the surrounding orange field with elegant bamboo leaves, now faded from time. See less
