This charming 24-inch stool is an authentic piece of functional art from the Senufo people of the Ivory Coast. In Senufo culture, these stools, known as pila, were traditionally used by village elders and high-ranking members of the Poro society. They were carved from a single, massive piece of indigenous hardwood, often iroko or mahogany, and were intended to last for generations as symbols of the owner's status and connection to the earth. The top of this stool features a rare and highly detailed relief carving of an elephant, framed by geometric "sawtooth" borders. In West African iconography, the elephant represents strength, royal power, and immense wisdom. The four tapered, conical legs are a hallmark of Senufo furniture design, providing a low, grounded stability. The wood has a deep, rich umber patina that glows with an authentic "user sheen," earned from decades of traditional use and handling within the community.
With its 18-inch height, this piece is the perfect height for a sophisticated side table or a sculptural coffee table in a curated living room. Its organic, hand-hewn silhouette and dark, warm tones make it an ideal anchor for a farmhouse or rustic space. Place it next to a low-profile linen sofa or use it to display a stack of art books and a primitive clay vessel to highlight the intricate elephant motif on the surface.
