A remarkable example of late Qing Dynasty craftsmanship, this circa 1885 hand-painted Chinese lacquer spectacle case is a vibrant fusion of artistry, symbolism, and utility. Set against a rich yellow background — a color traditionally reserved for royalty and associated with power, prosperity, and good fortune — the case features bold green and orange accents, both colors often symbolizing growth, vitality, and happiness in Chinese decorative arts. At the heart of the design is a striking depiction of a tiger amid a natural landscape. In Chinese culture, the tiger represents courage, protection, and strength, often believed to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune to the home. The case’s top lifts open and remains connected by a traditional corded string, ensuring the lid and base stay together while allowing convenient access for storing eyeglasses or small valuables.
Measuring 6" deep x 3" wide x 1.25" high, this visually captivating piece would make a distinctive statement display on a table, bookshelf, or in a collection of Asian decorative arts. While it shows a few areas of minor lacquer loss and age cracks — consistent with its 140-year history — it retains wonderful character and presence. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
A beautifully preserved artifact rich in color, symbolism, and craftsmanship — perfect for collectors of antique Asian art, lacquerware, or cultural curiosities.
