The figure is … Read more Circa 1880, this elegant antique French bronze bust portrays a refined Renaissance gentleman with a contemplative expression. The figure is modeled wearing a soft period cap and richly detailed attire, including a bodice decorated with scrolling ornament and a finely incised collar. The sculptural modeling is crisp and fluid, particularly in the treatment of the wavy shoulder-length hair, softly draped garment, and the calm, expressive facial features that give the piece a dignified presence.
The bronze retains a warm, rich brown patina with subtle golden highlights that accentuate the facial planes and sculptural depth. The bust is raised on a classical circular socle above a square plinth base, creating a balanced architectural presentation ideal for a desk, library table, or console in a study or refined interior.
The base is signed “Duchoiselle,” attributing the work to Alexandre Duchoiselle (1849–1886), a Paris-born sculptor and the son of sculptor Louis François Duchoiselle. Likely trained in his father’s atelier, Alexandre worked within the academic tradition of late 19th century French sculpture and contributed to important decorative programs in Paris, including the Palais Garnier (Opéra), the Louvre, and the Hôtel de Brienne, where he executed architectural reliefs and ornamental figures. He is also documented as producing smaller marble and bronze sculptures intended for decorative interiors. His premature death at the age of thirty-seven curtailed a promising career, and signed works by him remain relatively scarce today.
The sculpture is in excellent antique condition commensurate with age and use and retains a beautifully preserved period patina.
