A charming Japanese Imari porcelain ginger jar with cover made in Arita, Japan in the late 19th century. Arita was the historic centre of Japanese porcelain manufacture and the origin of the famous Imari export wares admired by European collectors for centuries.
The jar is of elegant baluster form with a domed lid and pointed finial, reflecting traditional East Asian storage jar designs inherited from earlier Chinese vessels.
Decorated in the classic Imari palette of cobalt blue and iron-red enamels, the surface is arranged with alternating panels showing flowering branches with a bird in flight and stylised floral motifs. The shoulder and base are enriched with geometric borders and dense blossom decoration typical of Imari porcelain.
This type of covered jar was produced both for domestic use and export and became a popular decorative form in European interiors during the 19th century.
