A sculptural vase made by Egermann in Nový Bor, Czech Republic, in the 1990s. It retains its original gold foil label, printed with the Egermann name and Czech Republic.
The colour is stacked rather than mixed. The foot holds a mass of deep red and amber under a thick colourless casing; above it the wall turns through orange, and the upper body and the whole crown run to a dense cobalt blue. The twist in the body drags those three zones diagonally across one another, so the transitions read as flares rather than bands, and the amber flickers up into the blue along the ribs.
The rest of this range is amber. This is the only example with the colour built in three stacked zones.
The body was blown into a ribbed mould and twisted while still hot. The rim was then opened by hand, pulled out into a crown of long tapering points that finish in colourless glass, each drawn to a different length and angle. No two vases finished this way come out alike.
Nový Bor has been a glassmaking town since the eighteenth century, and the Egermann name comes from Friedrich Egermann (1777-1864), the Nový Bor glassmaker who patented Lithyalin in 1828 and introduced the copper-red stain in 1832. The name is carried today by a works in the same town. This vase is factory production, carrying the works' own label.
