Designed and executed by Arroyo Design in the mid 2000's as part of a large dining set.
Arroyo Design specialized in designing and executing historically referenced custom furniture pieces for thirty years, from 1984 - 2014. The original clients for this set have recently willed it back to us. We were often inspired by Biedermeier, Victorian eras, and spent some years working in the Craftsman design vocabulary of Charles and Sumner Greene. The Cornells, who were the clients for these pieces, were the only people for whom we worked in the Art Nouveau style, having done other pieces besides the dining set this was part of. This piece required extensive prototyping and mock-ups in modeling foam over several months, with much input from the clients.
We worked in some standard domestic hardwoods, but were primarily known for working in mesquite, as in this piece. Mesquite is a wild desert wood that grows in the Sonoran Desert. It is exceedingly difficult to procure and work, but is nonetheless quite beautiful, as you will note.
Old-world joinery and bookmatched panels and table tops were standard, as in this piece.
In this combination of material and style, it would be safe to say this piece is unique in the world.
Some of our more notable clients included Paul and Linda McCartney, Larry McMurtry, Diana Ossana, Linda Ronstadt, Roger Waters, Gene Hackman, John Larroquette and the Dalai Lama (through the Arizona Friends of Tibet, for a 3-day lecture series he gave in Tucson).
Arroyo Design has been published in Elle Decor , Architectural Digest among many other publications.
The piece is solid mesquite.

Arroyo Design determined to use the challenges of this wild desert wood to our aesthetic benefit. The top for this table is made up of three bookmatched pairs of boards, so six boards total, resulting in a symmetry across the top from side to side. So you can see figure on one side of the top that is reflected on the other side. Because mesquite trees don't typically like to grow straight, the fact that this table top is 8' 10" long in mesquite makes it an unusual table. less
