A rare piece from the world of surreal design and historic reverie, this four-shelf étagère by Fornasetti is a sculptural nod to classical grandeur. Designed exclusively for the Fornasetti atelier in Milan in 1996, it is framed by two stately Corinthian columns—each rendered with meticulous detail in hand-lacquered wood and accented with Fornasetti’s signature trompe-l'œil technique.
The delicate tension between antiquity and modernity plays out across four floating glass shelves, supported by brass fittings. A visual poem in monochrome and transparency, this étagère elevates the art of display with its neoclassical influence and unmistakable Fornasetti wit.
Piero Fornasetti (1913–1988) was a visionary Italian artist, designer, and printmaker whose work turned the ordinary into the extraordinary. Best known for his surreal, whimsical, and often neoclassical inspired imagery, Fornasetti created a universe where fine art met functional design.
His aesthetic blends classical motifs, such as Roman architecture, sun faces, and ancient statuary, with unexpected elements of surrealism and humor. Today, the atelier is run by his son, Barnaba Fornasetti, who continues to evolve and reissue his father’s designs while introducing new works in the same spirit.
Condition: Great vintage condition with surface scuffs, marks, and minor chipping to the lacquered wood. The four glass shelves are in very good condition, with one featuring a minor chip along the edge, as shown in the photos. Each shelf secures to the frame with brass hardware. Includes the original Certificate of Authenticity.
Please note: the étagère should be placed against a wall for additional support, as there is a slight sway that cannot be reinforced. Includes seven pieces in total and requires assembly.
Additional Dimensions: Height Between Shelves: 14.25"
