A dramatic Postmodern sculptural centerpiece bowl crafted in mouth-blown Bohemian art glass by Egermann (Nový Bor), Czechoslovakia, circa 1990s.
The vessel features a striking winged, biomorphic silhouette drawn out to two ascending tips, commanding 29 cm across a tabletop. Demonstrating advanced glassmaking craftsmanship, the deep cobalt core is wrapped in combed white filaments marvered flush into the wall, echoing the dynamic contour of the wings.
The exterior is finished with a vibrant metallic iridescent lustre shifting through petroleum violet, bronze, and bottle green depending on ambient lighting, anchored by a thick, light-refracting base with trapped amber undertones. Drawing inspiration from historic Bohemian Art Nouveau lustre traditions, this piece stands out as a sophisticated architectural accent.
Three separate decorative operations are carried on one body. Fine white threads are wound round the wall and marvered flush into it, so they lie level with the surface rather than standing proud; where the points were drawn out the threading stretches and bends with the glass, which is what makes the two wings read as movement rather than as shape. Over the threading lies an iridescent metallic surface that shifts from bronze through green to violet as you move around the piece. At the foot, patches of amber are trapped in the thickness of the glass and catch the light from below.
Acquired together with a group of pieces carrying the Egermann factory label, Nový Bor.
