A striking sculptural art glass vase designed by Pertti Santalahti for Humppila Glassworks, Finland, dating from the 1970s.
Santalahti, one of the most distinctive Finnish designers working with Humppila during the postwar decades, became known for his bold exploration of organic forms and textured glass surfaces. His work reflects the experimental spirit of Scandinavian studio glass in the 1970s, where natural landscapes, ice formations, and flowing organic structures served as key sources of inspiration.
This piece beautifully embodies that philosophy. The vase features a dramatic asymmetrical sculptural silhouette, resembling frozen flames or crystalline formations emerging from the base. The glass transitions from deep amber tones to clear textured ice-like glass, creating a dynamic interplay of color, transparency, and light.
The richly textured surface enhances the sculptural presence of the piece while allowing light to refract through the glass in constantly changing patterns. Both decorative and expressive, the vase functions as a stand-alone art object as much as a functional vessel.
Today, Santalahti’s works for Humppila are increasingly appreciated by This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
