A large sculptural vase made by Egermann in Nový Bor, Czech Republic, in the 1990s. It retains its original gold foil label, printed with the Egermann name and Czech Republic.
The body was blown into a ribbed mould and then twisted while still hot, which draws the ribs into a long spiral running the full height. The rim was worked by hand afterwards: the glass was pulled out into a crown of tapering points, each drawn to a different length and angle, so no two vases from this model finish the same way.
The glass is cased in three layers — turquoise over opal white over a clear core. Where the wall is thick the turquoise reads almost solid; where it thins towards the points the white comes forward, and the two run together along the spiral in streaks. Inside the crown the lining is almost entirely white.
At 44 cm this is the tallest piece in the range.
Nový Bor has been a glassmaking town since the eighteenth century, and the Egermann name comes from Friedrich Egermann (1777-1864), the Nový Bor glassmaker who patented Lithyalin in 1828 and introduced the copper-red stain in 1832. The name is carried today by a works in the same town. This vase is factory production, carrying the works' own label.
44 cm high.
