A sculptural vase made by Egermann in Nový Bor, Czech Republic, in the 1990s. It retains its original gold foil label, printed with the Egermann name and Czech Republic.
The rim sets this piece apart from the rest of the range. Rather than being pulled out into points, the wall was folded outward, carried over and rejoined to itself, forming six closed loops around the mouth. Seen from above they read as a six-petalled flower with an open eye at the centre. Closing a loop in hot glass is a more demanding operation than drawing a point, because the glass has to return and fuse without cracking and without leaving a seam.
The vase stands on a separate foot of solid colourless glass, shaped into rounded lobes rather than left as a plain disc. The body above it is cased, and the colour is stacked in four zones that run into one another: warm amber through the upper wall and the loops, olive through the shoulder, a deep navy gathering at the waist, and then the clear foot. Against the light the olive band is the one that moves most.
The body was blown into a ribbed mould, and the ribs converge at the bottom of the interior into a radiating star, visible when the vase is looked into from above.
Nový Bor has been a glassmaking town since the eighteenth century, and the Egermann name comes from Friedrich Egermann (1777-1864), the Nový Bor glassmaker who patented Lithyalin in 1828 and introduced the copper-red stain in 1832. The name is carried today by a works in the same town. This vase is factory production, carrying the works' own label.
