This finely engraved 18th-century copperplate print depicts a diplomatic encounter between Captain James Cook and the Tahitian chief O-Mai during Cook’s celebrated second voyage to the Pacific. The scene shows O-Mai accompanied by members of his family visiting Cook aboard the HMS Resolution at O-Taheitee (Tahiti) around August 1773, a moment that symbolized early cultural exchanges between European explorers and the peoples of the South Pacific. At the center of the composition Captain Cook stands on the deck of the Resolution, greeting the Tahitian chief with a formal gesture. O-Mai is shown prominently, dressed in traditional Tahitian garments, accompanied by his wife and sisters. Their presence aboard the ship suggests a moment of curiosity, diplomacy, and mutual observation between two very different cultures. Around them stand British sailors and officers, dressed in naval uniforms typical of the late 18th century, watching the encounter unfold. Above the scene a large ship’s flag billows in the wind, framed by the rigging and mast of the vessel, reinforcing the maritime setting. The composition is surrounded by an elegant decorative border typical of late 18th-century book engravings. A cartouche at the top reads “Engraved for Moore’s Voyages and Travels,” identifying the print as an illustration produced for one of the popular travel compilations of the era. Such works brought the discoveries and narratives of exploration to a wide European readership eager to learn about distant lands and peoples. The lower caption reads: “O-Mai, his Wife, and Sisters visiting Capt. Cook on board the Resolution Sloop at O-Taheitee.” The design was created by the English artist Samuel Wale, known for his historical and travel illustrations, and engraved by Charles Grignion, one of the most accomplished British engravers of the period. Their collaboration resulted in a clear and detailed composition that conveys both the theatricality and the historical significance of the encounter. Cook’s voyages fundamentally transformed European knowledge of the Pacific. Encounters such as this one, in which Polynesian leaders and European explorers met face-to-face aboard ships or on island shores, played an important role in shaping the cultural and scientific exchanges that followed. Prints like this served not only as illustrations but also as visual documents that shaped European perceptions of the Pacific world. Today the engraving stands as an evocative historical image from the great age of exploration. It is particularly appealing to collectors interested in Captain Cook, Pacific exploration, maritime history, and early ethnographic imagery.
