This refined early 19th-century architectural engraving originates from the rare and important publication *Paris et ses Monuments, mesurés, dessinés et gravés*, created by the French architect and engraver Louis-Pierre Baltard and published in Paris in 1803. Dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte, Baltard’s monumental work sought to document the architectural treasures of Paris through precise measured drawings and finely executed engravings. The publication remains one of the earliest systematic visual surveys of the monuments of Paris produced during the Napoleonic era. The present plate is titled *Cheminées du Louvre* and depicts richly ornamented chimney structures from the Louvre Palace. These decorative chimneys formed part of the elaborate architectural skyline of the historic palace complex and exemplify the ornamental richness of French royal architecture. Rather than simple functional structures, chimneys on monumental buildings such as the Louvre were often conceived as highly decorative architectural elements designed to contribute to the grandeur of the roofline and façade. Baltard’s engraving presents an architectural study of several chimney structures featuring elaborate decorative programs typical of French Renaissance and later classical design traditions. The central chimney is adorned with a large square panel displaying a dramatic radiating sun motif surrounding a classical face—an emblematic design associated with royal symbolism and solar imagery widely used in French court decoration. Beneath this panel appears an oval medallion framed by intricate ornamental motifs including scrollwork, garlands, and decorative rosettes. Surrounding architectural details reveal the complexity of the ornamental program. Rich vegetal garlands, carved masks, medallions, and geometric borders decorate the surfaces of the chimney structures. The foreground includes a heavy stone cornice with sculptural detailing, reinforcing the architectural depth of the composition. In the background Baltard includes additional chimney forms, demonstrating variations in decorative treatment while maintaining the overall harmony of the architectural ensemble. Executed with exceptional technical precision, the engraving demonstrates Baltard’s mastery of copperplate engraving. Through delicate hatchings and finely controlled burin work, he carefully reproduces the texture of carved stone, the depth of architectural moldings, and the intricate details of ornamental carving. The resulting image has remarkable clarity and depth, allowing viewers to study the decorative architecture with almost sculptural realism. Architectural prints such as this were created not only as illustrations but also as instructional references for artists and architects studying historic monuments and classical ornament. Baltard’s engravings preserve important details of French architectural heritage and reflect the Neoclassical era’s fascination with documenting and preserving the great monuments of the past. Today prints from *Paris et ses Monuments* are highly prized by collectors of architectural prints, historians of French architecture, and interior designers seeking authentic classical imagery. The dramatic ornamentation and strong architectural composition make this engraving particularly decorative and well suited for framing. This is an original print from the year of publication, not a later reproduction. The print is offered unframed, allowing the buyer full freedom to choose framing appropriate to personal taste or interior design preferences. Any framed examples shown in photographs are for visual inspiration only.
